Any suggestions for creating privacy for a small patio?

When I was in ur shoes.

I bought some lattice. It was pretty cheap and a small price to pay. The lattice was raw timber in a cross hatch design.

I painted the lattice. You can choose whatever colour you want. Maybe use a colour you have inside or outside features.

Using cable ties you can attach the lattive to the balcony rail. Do it in a few spots to keep it stable.

Buy some terracotta pots and use a nice contrasting paint, and paint them. Ideally it would be outside paint to stop the paint peeling. If you don't want to do this you can get some yogurt and smear it on the pots. It encouages moss and makes the pot look authentic and lovely.

Buy a couple of climbing plants. You might need three or four depending on the area. I used jasmine as it has a nice fragrance at dusk.

Buy a few extra pots and use tall bushy plants. I used Golden Cane and Lilly Pilli (but im down under so the varieties differ), go to a nursery (garden shop?) and ask the attendant.

The jasmine should grow pretty quickly (providing maintanence and good soil.)

Voila! Watch it grow. Look after the plants to have a private balcony in no time. You can put a little set of table and chairs with some nice candles and it will be the perfect little hideway!

Hope it helps

I live in a row house so I had someone build me lattice walls to the left and right of the porch. I also installed two very long shutters painted with exterior paint that I can swing in 180 degree angle so depending on where I'm sitting, I can create privacy just by moving the shutter. I also planted non-invasive native coral honeysuckle that will grow up the posts, but that will take some time. As a filler, you can also use morning glory - it will make it's way up any trellis. They aren't native, but do not seem to be invasive either...
a trellis enclosure with jasmine , honeysuckle or some other nice smelling flower. it will give you seclusion whilst still looking very nice and if you don't like it then its easy to remove. no long term damage to your patio.
