Maya, Blender, Lightwave, 3Ds Max.
Blender is free, you can download it at http://www.blender.org/download/get-blender/ and it has options for both Mac and PC users.
You can also get books on Blender from Hastings, I have a couple (don't remember the titles but email me if you need them and I will email you back the titles.) You can also do online tutorials, but I think the books are much better. You probably would need to get books or use tutorials because the interface can be frustrating until you get used to it, but it's a powerful program--check out Elephants Dream. This animation was created to showcase the capabilities of Blender.

I haven't worked much with Maya. DreamWorks used it for Shrek. They used an in-house program called PDI for the primary animation but also used Maya for other elements, such as dynamic cloth animation and for character hair. http://www.digitalmediafx.com/Shrek/shrekfaq.html
I use Lightwave most of the time and you can also get some books on Lightwave from Hastings. Good tutorials are athttp://www.newtek.com/lightwave/ under the training tab. They used Lightwave for special effects for the movie 300. They also animated Chicken Run (I think) with Lightwave and also Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius several years ago. Lightwave has been seen as trying to play catch up to other animation programs, and their latest version has really been phenomenal. Their next software release is supposed to have some incredible special effects and rendering options and I can't wait to play with it.
I've never used 3ds Max, don't know a thing about it but I've seen some artwork done with this program that looks awesome.
If you are a student, Lightwave and Maya both offer student discount prices for purchasing the software. campustech.com has some good offers, $195 for Lightwave and $389.98 for Maya. I've bought from campustech before and they are excellent. http://www.campustech.com/department.asp?NAV=0101%26amp;SKW=DPanimation

3DS Max student version is at http://www.studica.com/products/product_detail.cfm?productid=54553
for $187
Also check out http://www.nextag.com/3ds-max-software/search-html
for people selling software. I've never used this site before so couldn't tell you much about it.
Otherwise, Maya's prices are $3000 and $7000 to purchase http://www.alias.com/eng/purchase/promotions/maya_industry_productivity_packs.shtml
and Lightwave is $895 and $995 to purchase and $395 and $495 for upgrades
http://www.videohardware.com/html/lightwave_v9.html
You might also look at a program called Poser, the characters are already created and it's compatible with Lightwave and Blender, but I've not used it myself so I don't know much about it.
If you want to purchase any of these and you are not a student, try the nextag site.
Cracked versions of all software are available on the web, but these are bad news. Often it is a corrupted program, it may not be compatible with other versions of that program or even other software programs that it would otherwise work with. People may also attach viruses and malware to these files that your computer may not detect. Malicious programs are getting harder to detect, check out http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/technology/2007-11-19-spam-storm_N.htm It's about email but shows how difficult it is to detect this stuff.
I've never used a program from file sharing but have heard too many bad stories about it.
Good luck, hope this helps!
Adobe Photoshop isn't 3D.
3ds max is pretty awesome, but way over $350, but they do appear to have an essentials version that only runs about $50, but it's probably stripped down so bad it's useless.
Zbrush is a little closer at $585, but still out of the range.
How about blender? Keep the $350 and buy a better video card for all the rendering you'll be doing with the number one FREE 3d renderer.

Photoshop doesnt create 3D objects, it creates 2D pictures that look 3D. If you want a real 3D program you want something like Maya. These kind of programs are called modeling programs.
Adobe photoshop hands down. msn me if you want pur3ch40s@hotmail.com and i ca give you some pointers.
