Creating overview thumbnail sheets for image directories?

I have plenty of directories containing loads of images.

I'd like to (automatically, batch-) create one image (kind of a thumbnail sheet) containing thumbnails of all the images in that directory for each directory.

Any software suggestion for this task from your side?Creating overview thumbnail sheets for image directories?
netpbm or imagemagick, used with a bash (or perl or what you like) script could be the solution, but if you dont know how, it could be a long learning path.

there are ';free'; sw that makes html album, to do so they create thumbnails and link them into an html page you can open with a browser.

could this be the right one?

(remember that you are not forced to publish it on the web, keep your files in your local hd and use them offline...)

another sw could be

bt maybe both do not do exactly what you want (try imagemagick montage too, resizing of course each source image)
